Years ago, I heard people say you need three full days to explore Tokyo Disneyland. Let’s see how much we can get done in just one day.
We arrived late the night before and had to get up early the next morning for Tokyo Disneyland — it was quite a physical test. Fortunately, the kids are well‑trained. Combined with plenty of mental preparation on my part, they could handle this grueling schedule.
Whether at USJ or Tokyo Disneyland, we always stand on the left side from security checks through waiting queues. These spots offer more room and easier access to restrooms.
The park opened promptly at 9:00 a.m. There is a key difference between Tokyo Disneyland and USJ. At Tokyo Disneyland, you enter by scanning the ticket QR code inside the official app. USJ accepts screenshot QR‑codes from mobile tickets; its own app cannot be used for park entry. Keep this point in mind.
Two years ago at DisneySea, we had a messy experience of “one mastermind leading three bungling helpers”. This time, the travel party was far more sharp‑witted. The two young adults headed straight toward the 11 o’clock direction as pre‑planned. My wife grabbed a PP pass for Big Thunder Mountain while I scrambled to secure a DPA for Beauty and the Beast as we walked.
Side note: Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go‑Seek is my favourite PP‑eligible attraction, but it was closed for maintenance in July. Big Thunder Mountain became our top priority. Wait times for other PP attractions — the Haunted Mansion and Star Tours — were only 10‑15 minutes, so they did not require PP passes. Do note that free PP benefits will be suspended starting September 2026; all future fast‑pass privileges will be purchased via DPA.
(For me, Monsters, Inc. deserves six stars. What a shame it was closed.)
“Dad, I’ve got the Big Thunder Mountain PP for 13:25.”
PP time slots are issued sequentially from morning onward. Getting an afternoon slot right after park entry meant most visitors were targeting the same ride.
I ran into trouble with credit‑card facial verification. Switching to another login card cost me some time. Even so, after entering the park at 9:09 a.m., time slots starting from 10:00 a.m. were still available, showing DPA competition was relatively mild that day. I finally picked the 14:05‑15:00 window. DPA lets you select your time slot as a paid service. On this particular day, Beauty and the Beast DPA slots would sell out completely around 10:30 a.m.
When buying DPA, select tickets for every member of your group. This is why setting nicknames for each family member is helpful, so you can specify participants individually. If you think DPA is too expensive and dad sits one out, simply select MOTHER, SON and DAUGHTER only.
(Then pick your time… Experienced as I am, racing against the clock, I still found mental bandwidth to take screenshots. I would say I was pretty professional!)
When purchasing DPA, my thinking was that mornings usually bring lighter crowds. We should ride other standby‑queue attractions first and unleash our “ace card” DPA slots in the busier afternoon hours.

The two young adults performed really well this time. Though we heard them debating directions along the way (“Left or right? This way or that?”), I ignored their chatter and stayed focused on my phone managing DPA purchases. Working as a pair, they successfully got our party of four to the back of the Splash Mountain standby queue.
9:20 a.m. ‑ Splash Mountain standby: 50 minutes / Beauty and the Beast: 120 minutes
9:20 a.m.: All locked in. Big Thunder Mountain PP 13:25‑14:25 / Beauty and the Beast DPA 14:05‑15:05. Currently in Splash Mountain standby, 50‑minute wait.
Splash Mountain is well worth the wait. It is like a surfing boat adventure with multiple plunges and colourful animated characters. Our whole family rated it as one of the best attractions, arguably even better than the hugely‑popular Beauty and the Beast.

After Splash Mountain, we moved through Fantasyland to ride our pre‑selected standby attractions: Peter Pan’s Flight, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, Haunted Mansion and Pinocchio’s Daring Journey — all vehicle‑based dark rides. July 17 turned out to be a good day, as most Japanese schools held their closing ceremonies. Apart from Splash Mountain, The Happy Ride with Baymax, Beauty and the Beast and Big Thunder Mountain, nearly every other attraction posted wait times under 20 minutes. That meant Haunted Mansion and Star Tours did not require PP passes at all. One gentle warning: Snow White’s Scary Adventures contains some slightly frightening moments.

We had accomplished so much in the morning that someone in the family suggested seeing Mickey’s PhilharMagic 3D show. As I expected, aside from Japanese‑language audio, it was identical to the version I have seen countless times in Hong Kong Disneyland.

Recharging our energy after the 3D show, we dined at Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall in Fantasyland.
Overall, the food quality was better than Hong Kong Disneyland, though Toadstool Cafe at USJ is far more delicious than both.
Buoyed by our productive morning and moderate crowd levels, my wife felt inspired to drop by the Princess Castle. Afterwards we headed over for our Big Thunder Mountain PP slot.
Big Thunder Mountain is somewhat similar to Hong Kong’s Grizzly Gulch, minus the backwards sections. My rating: ★★★★
At 14:45, it was time for our DPA window. Ta‑da! Here came the highlight of the day — Beauty and the Beast.
Set to iconic theme music, gliding along an extraordinarily long banquet table inside teacup‑style vehicles captures the atmosphere of the original fairy‑tale. Lavish stage scenes and a breathtaking transformation sequence make this the most‑talked‑about attraction. That said, some sections have groups of visitors circling face‑to‑face with nothing much happening; the mood can turn flat, almost shattering the fairy‑tale immersion. Just as I was feeling joyful for the happy‑ever‑after ending, a tourist lifted her phone to take photos right in front of me, ruining the moment.
Beauty and the Beast: ★★★★★
Following Beauty and the Beast, we skipped uninteresting photo‑op zones and rode two older attractions: Gadget’s Go‑Coaster and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin. The former is a junior roller‑coaster; the latter is a zany dark ride reminiscent of bumper‑cars.

We had accomplished so much that I proposed queuing for the popular The Happy Ride with Baymax. However, my family was intimidated by its 90‑minute wait time. After all, everyone was still fatigued from arriving the previous night.

None of the kids expected Baymax to draw such long queues. It appeals to all ages, with more varied spinning movements than teacups — hence Baymax’s massive popularity.
Next we moved to Tomorrowland for Star Tours (similar to Iron Man Experience in Hong Kong Disneyland), then our final pre‑planned attraction: Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride. Pirates of the Caribbean builds wonderful atmospheric scenes, yet the artificial sea fog was so realistic that weary‑eyed me grew drowsy. Both attractions had wait‑times of 15‑20 minutes.

We had finished every item on our itinerary by around 18:00. There would still be plenty of time to queue for Baymax and grab dinner before the 20:00 castle evening show.
“Waiting that long for the night show is unnecessary; we have seen similar ones back in Hong Kong.”
The family preferred heading back early, as everyone was physically drained. Had we enjoyed an extra rest day upon arrival, handling this full‑day itinerary would not have been a problem for them. I have explained why we chose this travel date in earlier posts and will not repeat it here. All in all, thanks to thorough pre‑trip preparation and full‑team cooperation, our day concluded satisfactorily. Day 3 will centre around Shibuya in the evening, giving everyone a chance to recover energy.
