MAK家BLOG: Tokyo Trip Planner Diary 2026 (Part 12) Shopping‑Culture Experience

Whenever I travel to Japan, no matter which city I visit or how long I stay, an outlet‑shopping trip always goes onto my itinerary. I am not much of a shopper, nor do I haul piles of goods back to Hong Kong merely for a 20‑30% discount. Yet I really appreciate the laid‑back vibe at Japanese outlet malls — spacious premises, light foot traffic, dining options on‑site, where both vendors and visitors move at an unhurried pace.

(It is a different story for Hong Kong outlets, cramped and fiercely commercialised.)

I have visited Shisui near Narita Airport several times in past years and Karuizawa Outlet last year. This time I picked Makuhari Outlet‑ Mitsui Outlet Park Makuhari. Its location right beside Kaihin‑Makuhari Station makes getting around easy. I can drop by anytime without rushing to match shuttle‑bus timetables.

Below is my shopping experience at Karuizawa Outlet in 2025

Tokyo Again 2025 (8) - Karuizawa Day Trip (Part 4 - Day and Night......Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza)

(Kaihin‑Makuhari Station is merely two stops away from Maihama Station, home to Tokyo Disneyland.)

Straight ahead from the station lies Plena Makuhari, mostly filled with eateries and 300‑yen shops. After dinner, I left my brother, who had no interest in shopping, at the lounge area to surf the internet, and carried on our shopping spree.

Makuhari Outlet is divided into Site A, B, C and D. Some say it is not large enough, yet I disagree. Size is not everything for an outlet mall; appealing stores are what matter most. We ended up wandering for more than four hours, which proves its charm. Its shortcoming is the lack of child‑friendly facilities. It can be tricky to keep children occupied while you shop.

We had a second stop scheduled for the day‑ Aeon Mall Makuhari. Another Aeon, mainly a supermarket, is within walking distance of Makuhari Outlet. We headed for Aeon Mall Makuhari‑Shinsakae located at Makuhari‑Toyosuna Station, a huge complex packed with dining, entertainment and shops. Do not mix these two places up.

Kaihin‑Makuhari and Makuhari‑Toyosuna are just one station apart. Toyosuna is not a major stop though. You have to take local JR trains that halt at every station. Limited‑express and faster services skip Makuhari‑Toyosuna completely.

The mall consists of four zones: Ekimae Mall, Active Mall, Pet Mall and Grand Mall. Short on time, we passed through Pet Mall and explored Grand Mall.

Grand Mall itself holds countless shops. Arriving after 7 p.m., we barely had enough time. We skipped dinner and shopped until the mall closed around 9 p.m.

(Photo: Head back to Makuhari‑Toyosuna Station to leave the mall. Do not follow the signs and try walking to Kaihin‑Makuhari Station… it is a 25‑minute walk!)

Restaurants and shops around Makuhari mostly close at nine. Unexpectedly, our final night in Tokyo ended with a late‑night bowl of ramen in Ueno. Sitting side‑by‑side with local night‑owls, I could order extra noodles twice after finishing my first serving. My wife said this was the best meal over the whole trip, and I could not agree more.

“Another bowl of plain noodles, please!” That feeling of not‑quite‑being‑satisfied mirrors this Tokyo journey.
