The sky fading into shades of grey-blue, the brightly lit city, and the horizon traced between urban sprawl and sky let you feel Shibuya's energy as night falls.

After our family met up in Shibuya, we enjoyed a yakiniku meal before heading to the iconic crosswalk. More than ten years ago, I was already struck by the sight of crowds crisscrossing the intersection. I never imagined it would become such a tourist attraction. Worldwide visitors walk back and forth with their phones raised, pushing its liveliness to new heights.
As dusk fell, we set off for Shibuya Sky.
Here are some tips for visiting Shibuya Sky:
1. Observation‑deck tickets go on sale up to 14 days in advance with selectable time slots. For example, on August 10, you can buy tickets for August 10 through August 24. To secure the popular time slot for August 24, aim for around 11:05 p.m. Hong Kong time on August 9. (Not exactly 11:00 p.m. From my experience, ticket updates come with roughly a ten‑minute margin of error.)
2. The most sought‑after time slots are sunset through the blue‑hour twilight, followed by night‑view hours. If you only want a quick visit, same‑day tickets for daytime entry are easily available. However, the sunset‑to‑blue‑hour slot is highly competitive, and night‑view tickets sell out very early.

3. Suppose sunset is at 17:00. It is recommended to book the 16:00 time slot. On busy days, after entering on the 14th floor and taking the express elevator to the 45th floor, you will need to queue for lockers, and there is another line for the famous “delta” photo spot.
4. How do I find out the sunset time for my visit to Shibuya Sky? Just ask an AI!
As a responsible blogger, I will briefly share our timeline for Saturday, July 18. (Sunset that day was at 18:45, with blue hour from 19:00‑19:45. Waiting through sunset all the way to blue‑hour twilight seemed too long, and we worried about huge crowds. Therefore I booked the 19:00 entry slot.)
“I told you it would be great!” Faced with such spectacular views, my daughter felt proud for suggesting this attraction.
Timeline overview:
19:01 ‑ Enter from the 14th floor with our tickets and take the elevator straight to the 45th floor.
19:05‑19:15 ‑ Right after stepping off the elevator, we queued for lockers on the 45th floor. Visitors must lock away all belongings except their mobile phones.
(Photo: You do not need to understand the staff’s Japanese instructions. Simply pick any locker with a key inserted and you are good to go.)
19:20 ‑ Proceed to the rooftop on the 46th floor. Shibuya spreads out beneath your feet, and you may take photos freely. Another queue forms for the famous “delta” spot for sweeping panoramic shots.

19:25‑19:50 ‑ Our wait that day lasted about 25 minutes. By the time we reached the delta spot at 19:52, it was already dark. If you want blue‑hour twilight shots at this photo spot, an earlier time slot is advisable.
(Waiting time can still be considerable. Keep this in mind when booking tickets.)

20:00 ‑ Return to the 45th floor to retrieve our belongings and tour the exhibition.

We passed the gift shop and Photo Counter on the 45th floor to view the pictures taken by staff at the delta spot.
20:20 ‑ Take the elevator back down to the 14th floor. This whole Shibuya Sky visit took one hour and twenty minutes. If you wish to experience the full transition from sunset to nightfall, plan for more than two hours.

Based on the weather forecast, we made a last‑minute change to our plan and headed for Fuji‑Q Highland a day early on Sunday, July 19!
