Tokyo Trip Planner Diary 2026 (Part 11) Dad’s “One‑Unicorn Show”

We came back to Odaiba this time, partly for IT.

Because if we visit again some other day, IT will no longer be here.

I did not think going from four to three people would give me more say in our plans. When we arrived at Toyosu Market Station and saw the sign “Market Closed Day”, the two teenagers immediately wanted to leave. (From what I know, while the fish market shuts on Sundays, some dining‑and‑shopping outlets should still be open. They just wanted to stay indoors because of the scorching heat.)

As a dad, I saw no point in insisting. We proceeded to Lalaport Toyosu as originally planned. Spanning three phases, Lalaport is huge. Stores for Muji, Daiso and numerous lifestyle brands are all generously sized. It also houses KidZania, the children’s role‑play facility. (I suspect the youngsters have outgrown this kind of pretend‑play.) It brought back memories of when the kids visited Baby Boss in Taipei years ago…

Lalaport makes a fine rainy‑day option. Though crowded on holidays, it has plenty of restaurants, so finding food is fairly easy. Interestingly, the teenagers picked a lunch spot called “Toyosu Jōgai Shokudō”. At best, we got a small taste of Toyosu.

The clock read 4:15 PM…

“Come with Dad to Odaiba to see the Gundam?”

“Dad planned this whole trip; we might as well keep him company for the Gundam.”

My daughter’s thoughtful reply touched me. The Unicorn’s final transformation show for the day was at 5:00 PM — we should make it.

On our very first Odaiba trip, I brought the two kids to Legoland and Oedo Onsen Monogatari. They have probably forgotten much of what they experienced back then.

On our second Odaiba visit, we went to the all‑indoor amusement park Joypolis. The kids left me to tackle all kinds of intense rides I could never handle, while I sought out my own favourites: House of Death and Attack on Titan.

Still, both earlier trips ended with a touch of regret: we had narrowly missed seeing the Gundam. I am not a Gundam fan and knew little about the Unicorn’s backstory. Yet I held an inexplicable sentimental urge to see it in person.

This third time, they walked beside me, chasing that long‑unfulfilled wish.

Naturally, Gundam Base stands prominently at Tokyo Plaza. There are also dedicated shops for One Piece, Doraemon and Hello Kitty.

4:50 PM — crowds gathered at Tokyo Plaza, all eager to witness the Unicorn’s transformation. Everyone craned their necks, waiting for 5:00 PM.

The moment arrived. The Unicorn lit up with several red lights, its limb joints shifted, its horn split open, its face switched — and that was it.

Below is the movie

“What? That’s all?” Visitors of all nationalities let out sighs that all seemed to say the same thing. Anyone expecting a dynamic, flamboyant performance would likely feel let down.

I took one last look at Odaiba before leaving, for no one knew when we would return.

The Unicorn Gundam will be dismantled at the end of August, bringing an end to its nearly nine‑year watch over Odaiba. On this day, I finally got to see it before it was gone.
