It has been nearly ten years since my last visit to Tokyo Disneyland. Many rules and facilities have undergone drastic changes. That said, I visited Tokyo DisneySea only two years ago, and since both parks operate on largely identical frameworks, planning this trip has been fairly straightforward.
Below is a checklist of essential information and pre-trip preparations for anyone visiting for the first time, to help set your expectations.
First off, I am not an ultra-competitive professional tour guide, nor do I aim to squeeze out the maximum park experience by spending a lot of money. As such, the advice below may not suit everyone.
1. Tickets / DPA / 40th Anniversary PP
Park tickets are generally easy to purchase. You may pick your travel date based on the 7-day weather forecast. (Do bear in mind the resort is located in Chiba Prefecture, not central Tokyo.) Weather does not drastically ruin your Disneyland experience; on days with unsettled weather, visitor numbers tend to drop, which could work in your favour.
(Even buying tickets on August 1 for entry on August 2 is completely hassle-free.)
Disney Premier Access (DPA) can be confusing for first-timers. It is an add-on service purchasable only after entering the park, which drastically cuts queue waiting times — essentially the paid fast pass. DPA is only available for popular attractions such as Beauty and the Beast, Splash Mountain and Baymax. Prices range from 1,000 to 2,000 yen per person; Beauty and the Beast costs 2,000 yen per guest. If travelling as a party of four and hoping to save 80–120 minutes of queuing, that totals 8,000 yen for one ride. Money does not guarantee instant access either: DPA slots for the highly sought-after Beauty and the Beast usually sell out before noon. You also cannot purchase a second DPA immediately after buying one.

40th Anniversary Priority Pass (PP): The complimentary fast pass launched for the park’s 40th anniversary. It follows similar rules to DPA, with zero cost. While this free service does not cover the newest rides, it includes excellent attractions such as Monsters, Inc., Big Thunder Mountain and the Haunted Mansion. Smart timing when collecting PP can greatly improve your day. Unfortunately, this free scheme will end in September 2026. Moving forward, more rides will switch to paid DPA only.
There is also the Standby Pass (SP). This is a timed entry reservation system, but it only applies to stage shows and restaurant bookings. You will not lose out much if you do not fully understand how it works for ride experiences.
2. Tokyo Disney Resort App Setup
Although tickets are easy to buy, you should purchase them a few days ahead and link them to the official Tokyo Disney Resort App. I added all four of our tickets to the app, then linked my wife’s Disney Account within the group. This setup allowed us to coordinate seamlessly once we entered the park: while I bought DPA for Beauty and the Beast for the whole party, my wife simultaneously secured free PP for Big Thunder Mountain for all four of us.
In addition, I recommend pre-saving a credit card with facial verification enabled for payments inside the app.
Another useful tip for the app: if you plan to visit on a Saturday, you can open the interactive map on a preceding Saturday (Japan time) to check real-time wait times for all attractions. This helps you gauge relative popularity and expected queues.
3. Map & Pre-Trip Briefing with the Family
Printing an A3 full-colour park map might sound over the top. However, explaining your itinerary to travel companions on a tiny phone screen is impractical. While the app map has GPS functionality, I have repeatedly run into messy mix-ups during busy days — accidentally viewing the DisneySea map while inside Disneyland, and vice versa. A physical paper map offers instant, clear overview.
This “briefing” is essentially a pre-agreed plan with the children, summarised below:
• 06:00 Morning Call on 17 July | Leave the hotel before 07:00 | Aim to arrive at the Disneyland main gates before 08:00
• First destination upon entry: Splash Mountain (Attraction No.70, roughly 11 o’clock on the park map). The two children will lead the way while the parents sort out mobile app bookings. No stopping to ask “Dad, which way do we go?” once inside the gates.
• We will skip most shows if we cannot understand Japanese, except the final fireworks and light display.
• Rides come first; meals are secondary.
Below is the curated battle plan. I have excluded attractions also available at Hong Kong Disneyland, Japanese-language interactive experiences, and character meet-and-greets which do not interest teenagers.

• A3 printed park map
• Printed copies of tickets (backup)
• Umbrella
• Portable handheld fan
• Power bank
• Reusable water bottle
• Cooling towels (These stay cool when soaked; available at sports stores in Hong Kong. Holding an umbrella while walking back and forth is cumbersome when acting as the organiser, and cooling towels worn on the head work well for heat relief.)
• Light snacks for breakfast while waiting for park opening (08:00 to 09:00)
• Picnic mat for the one-hour wait before gates open
5. Transport
Take the JR Yamanote Line from Ueno to Tokyo Station, transfer to the Keiyo Line bound for Maihama Station. The route is convenient, but note the long 15-minute underground transfer walk inside Tokyo Station. When planning routes on Google Maps, set departure time for 7:00 AM on your travel date to get accurate timetables and routing.
(JR Keihin-Tōhoku Line and Yamanote Line are both viable options. The Hibiya Line is operated by Tokyo Metro; transferring between Metro and JR lines incurs higher combined fares.)
Once all preparations are complete, it is time to set off!
Depart Ueno Station (07:06 AM)
Transfer at Tokyo Station; the underground passage to the Keiyo Line feels endlessly long (07:35 AM)
Arrive at the main entrance arch of Tokyo Disneyland (08:06 AM)
