In Akihabara, eveyone is searching for their personal favourites. In Japan, one is no longer considered a child at age of 13, yet childlike innocence no age limits.
We had been to Akihabara only two years ago, so logically it should not have been included in our itinerary. However, to let my wife shop in Shinjuku on her own without worry, I had to pick a spot that the teenagers would find fascinating yet held zero appeal for her. This would prevent her from asking in return: “If it’s so fun, why aren’t we all going as a family?”
“But who will carry my shopping bags then!”
“Honey, I would gladly help you with that. Bring one extra helper, and you get a girl begging to buy merchandise plus a grumpy wife who keeps complaining about having to endure shopping culture… Buy‑one‑get‑two‑free is hardly a good deal!”
Privately, I had hoped my family would grant me two hours in Ningyo‑cho to trace the footsteps of Kaga Kyōichirō. But oh well. Akihabara for anime merchandise also sounded pretty good.
In short, most of this day was set for “split‑group activities”.

On this Akihabara trip, we visited Yodobashi Akiba. Floors 1‑5 of this department store failed to spark the two youngsters’ interest. The real highlight lay on the 6th floor — all kinds of toys, anime goods, over a hundred gashapon machines, and a Nintendo store, things kids (including me) love to browse.

Afterwards, we dropped by Animate and Hobby Paradise for anime‑related souvenirs, then headed to Taito Station for claw machines and arcade games. The multi‑floored anime merchandise in the first two stores was still dazzling. Mario Kart and Taiko no Tatsujin at Taito remained firm favourites among the young crowd. Free from carrying bags, I even squeezed in a few rounds of Street Fighter and won three matches.
While the overall route resembled our visit two years prior, the anime merchandise lineup had completely changed. That is why Akihabara always gives you a reason to come back.
