After a year, the night view of Ueno came into my sight once again. Dragging luggage through the bustling Ameya-Yokocho, I felt that familiar contrast between tourists and local residents.
Tabist Hotel Ueno 39 is just a 4 to 5-minute walk from Keisei Ueno Station. Without clear directions from Google Maps, we might have missed the discreet entrance shared by the hotel and a restaurant.
“I am not hotel staff.” the restaurant counter staff talked to me before I finished my question. I guessed he has practiced this sentence many times.
The tiny reception desk was empty, only a telephone with a message notice left behind. We arrived well after 10 p.m., and a moment of panic crept in — would we end up stranded outdoors? Fortunately, someone answered the call.
Nestled in central Ueno with a modest facade, I did not hold high expectations for the room quality. Last year, my wife and I stayed at APA Hotel Ueno Ekimae, a compact yet fully equipped property. That was why I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious the rooms at Tabist Hotel turned out to be.

(Ample wall hooks, which I really appreciate)
(Quad room with plenty of power sockets and USB ports beside every bed)
(Despite its small size, the hotel reception offers temporary luggage storage)
Below is a summary of the pros and cons of Tabist Hotel Ueno 39:
Pros:
(JR station is visible straight ahead when you turn right upon leaving the hotel)
1. Unbeatable location — Situated in the Ameya-Yokocho district, a 3-minute walk to Ueno JR and Metro stations, and also 3 minutes to Keisei Ueno Station for the Skyliner airport express.
2. Space — Rooms are roomy enough for four guests.
3. Facilities — Washing machine, microwave oven and bathtub are all available.
4. Service — Staff are limited in number yet friendly and helpful. Mandarin-speaking staff are on site.
5. Sound insulation — Noise is inevitable in busy Ueno, but rooms on the 4th floor and above generally offer decent soundproofing from my experience.
6. Only three rooms per floor, twelve rooms in total across the whole hotel, creating a quiet atmosphere.
7. An okonomiyaki restaurant connected to the building (operated independently from the hotel) serves outstanding wagyu okonomiyaki, highly recommended.
Cons:
1. While it delivers great value for money, service resources are inevitably limited. Bins and towels are replaced daily, but full room cleaning takes place only once every three days.
(Collect the trash can and used towels outside the door before leaving each day; staff will replace them.)
2. Noise issues may affect guests staying on lower floors.
3. There is only one hotel elevator. A slight rubbish odour can linger inside when cleaning takes place at night.
4. No security barriers in the lobby or elevator area, meaning outsiders can enter freely in theory. (Personally though, tourists can travel with peace of mind in Japan.)
We finished our meal at the okonomiyaki restaurant past midnight. I hurried the children off to bed — a gruelling packed itinerary awaits us tomorrow!
